Reconstruction of west Lee Street is scheduled to begin in August 2001. Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced plans for the $2.3 million project at a public meeting in Greenville on September 25.
A major facelift is planned for the section of Hwy. 224 from Wright Street to U.S. Hwy. 69. TxDOT Area Engineer John Yant announced plans to remove the entire asphalt surface, down to its concrete base, and to remove all existing curbs and gutters. A smooth-surfaced 4-inch hot-mix will overlay over the concrete base. Reconstruction will include installation of new sidewalks and wheelchair ramps, new curbs and gutters, and replacement of storm sewer inlets.
"Lee Street is a major artery for Greenville," said State Senator David Cain. He cited the importance of the planned reconstruction in improving access to the city and enhancing the approach to downtown Greenville. State Representative Betty Brown also attended the TxDOT presentation.
Main Street Advisory Board Chairman Clay Woods said, "This project comes at a time when increased interest is focused on development of our central business district. Improved access to the downtown area will be a real asset."
